Exploring Palace Cinemas eclectic venues around the country

In the nation’s capital, Palace Electric is one of our youngest sites and features eight gorgeous luxurious cinemas and Prosecco bar in a state of the art sustainable commercial, office and residential building. Palace Electric found its name as an homage to Electric Shadows, a major independent cinema in Canberra operated by Andrew Pike for over 25 years. From its first screening in 1979 of the Monty Python comedy-documentary PLEASURE AT HER MAJESTY’S to its last screening in 2006 of Almodovar’s melodrama VOLVER, Electric Shadows remained a hive of culture and alternative cinema which left a void Palace Electric was poised to fill.

Founder of Palace Cinemas, Antonio Zeccola, spoke about the addition of the cinema before its reopening, “Cinema choices have been very limited over recent years in Canberra and our research tells us that Canberra residents are crying out for more opportunities to see quality films. This Palace Electric Cinema will be dedicated to meeting their needs. We’ve undertaken an exhaustive search to find the perfect location for a Palace flagship cinema in our nation’s capital and the quality of this stunning precinct provides us with the opportunity to set a new and superior level of cinema experience”.

Winner of The People’s Choice Award for ‘Canberra’s Favourite Entertainment Venue’ for three years straight, Palace Electric quickly found its audience in Canberra for programming a mix of international and local art-house films, Hollywood blockbusters, family films and Palace Cinemas’ renowned film festivals. Housed in the award-winning NewActon Nishi complex, the building comprised of both retail, domestic and office space, features one of Australia’s largest timber facades and building integrated photovoltaic panel arrays, providing high-quality spaces that maximise energy efficiency and has set a benchmark for sustainable development. Palace Electric also boasts being Australia’s first purpose-built digital cinema, leading to a more architecturally focused design of the audio-visual aspects of individual cinemas and a more visual aesthetic atmosphere.
