Exploring Palace Cinemas eclectic venues around the country

Situated in the ‘little Italy’ of Sydney’s inner-west, Leichhardt, Palace Norton Street has remained one of our most iconic venues for over 20 years and is the perfect blend of modern sophistication and classic cinema warmth.

The site was a conversion of a former tile factory before opening as a four-screen cinema in 1998, designed by Tonkin Zulaikha. In 2013, the site was closed for refurbishment adding an additional four screens, a brand-new bar and lounge area to meet the increase in demand with the design focused on the use of light, which glows through tall windows and is contained by a backlit translucent ceiling.

This ceiling is focused on reflecting the actions of patrons, their movement and colours cast across the black surface and add visual energy, the more patrons, the more movement and colour and the greater the atmosphere for the next few hours of escapism. The exterior is rugged, yet refined, a design strategy to embody the new and old elements of the building and its history. The cinema won the 1999 Dulux Colour Award and the 2000 Metal Building Award of Merit.

Palace Norton Street has remained one of the most well-known cinemas in Sydney and most attended sites in the country, its unique personality makes it one of our greatest locations to experience the wide array of offerings from mainstream, to arthouse and foreign content.
