Jude Law is currently in talks to play the iconic Disney villain, Captain Hook, in the studio’s live-action film “Peter Pan & Wendy”, with Pete’s Dragon director David Lowery currently attached to direct the project, which was co-written by Lowery with Toby Halbrooks.
Disney’s 1953 animated Peter Pan remains the most successful adaptation of the novel by J.M. Barrie, based on a boy who wouldn’t age and the children whom he whisks away to the magical world of Neverland. The material has had a few incarnations but has never found major box office success, with Steven Spielberg’s Hook starring Robin Williams and Joe Wright’s Pan both underperforming.
If the deal is successful, Law will follow in the footsteps of Dustin Hoffman, Jason Isaacs and, most recently, Garrett Hedlund as actors who have filled the iconic antagonist role. In addition, the release is expected to be theatrical and not go to the Disney Plus streaming route.
This film comes off a very strong year of live-action adaptations with both Aladdin and The Lion King grossing $1 billion at the global box office, Disney was so happy with it’s Aladdin live-action film that it has begun to develop a sequel.
Though it is only in early discussion, we would love Jude Law take on the famous swashbuckling character and see what uniqueness he could bring to the role!
