Luca Guadagnino to Direct New Scarface Film

19 May

Director Luca Guadagnino has added yet another project to his already busy slate of films. The Academy Award-nominated Call Me By Your Name director has been tapped to helm the retelling of ‘Scarface’ for Universal Pictures, with the script for the latest iteration coming from master filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, working from earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman and Paul Attanasio.

This will mark the third iteration of the epic tale, originating with the 1932 Howard Hawks original to Brian de Palma’s Miami-set take in 1983, written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. Guadagnino’s version will reportedly be a reimagining of the original immigrant narrative established in both films, this time set in Los Angeles.

This marks Guadagnino’s second dip into reboot territory after revamping Dario Argento’s ballet school-set horror cult classic Suspiria in 2018 starring Dakota Johnson taking on the lead role original filled by Jessica Harper. Alongside this project, Guadagnino is also developing a revamp of the “Lord of the Flies” for Warner Bros., an adaptation of William Golding’s AP literature staple.

He is also creating the Call Me By Your Name sequel Find Me, adapted from author Andre Aciman’s 2019 follow up novel that revisits Elio and Oliver, whose relationship came to a bittersweet end at the conclusion of the film and book. Guadagnino recently said that he was to travel to the United States for a meeting with a potential screenwriter for the sequel just before Italy went into a widespread lockdown. “I was going to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I Don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part. Unfortunately, everything is cancelled. Of course, it’s a great pleasure to work with Timothee Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stulhbarg, Esther Garrel and many other actors. They will all be there in the new film.”

The new Scarface production will be produced by Dylan Clark via Dylan Clark Productions, with Scott Stuber serving as executive producer alongside Marco Marabito. Brian Williams will also executive-produce for Dylan Clark Productions. No release dates or cast have been locked in as of yet.
