Margot Robbie to lead all-female ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie

2 July

It was announced this week that Margot Robbie will star in a new female-led ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie for Disney, she will again be teaming up with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson who has signed on to write the script. The Robbie-Hodson collaboration, currently untitled and in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the previous Pirates franchise, but instead a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates label.

This project is being developed separately from the previously announced Pirates of the Caribbean reboot that is being assembled by original franchise writer Ted Elliot and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. Veteran Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both upcoming projects. The appetite for stories related to the long-running franchise is evident, the original Pirates of the Caribbean films which starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom as Elizabeth’s love interest Will Turner, became one of the most lucrative film franchises of all time, grossing over $4.5 billion across 5 feature films.

Margot Robbie continues to add to her eclectic CV of characters with this role, having taken on Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, and Queen Elizabeth I in recent years. Proving her ongoing commitment to female-led projects, Robbie will be teaming up with Ladybird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig for the highly-anticipated feminist Barbie film and will also produce and star as the titular character in Marian, an alternate take on Robin Hood that focuses on the women at the centre of the classic folk tale.

Following on from a jam-packed 2019 which saw Robbie appear in Tarantino’s Oscar-winning Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the Oscar-nominated Bombshell and reprising the role of Harley Quinn in her own blockbuster spin-off Birds Of Prey, the Hollywood superstar appears to be continuing her busy schedule into the near future with 20 producing credits and 12 acting roles currently in development.
