WEEKLY WATCH LIST

Sharing Is Caring

20 May

We’ll be sharing cinema together again soon, but until then, Palace Cinemas wants to share some of our film favourites with our Weekly Watch List.  Here’s to sharing and staying safe.

C’EST LA VIE (2017) | Olivier Nakache, Éric Toledano

A disgruntled caterer working his last wedding event and wants everything to run smoothly, but has to deal with a cast of eccentric characters and a girlfriend who’s flirting with a young server. This charming and eccentric comedy showcases the French pursuit for relatable and elegant comedies and deservedly attains its place among them.

“A beautifully cast ensemble that provides plenty of needle-sharp comic characterisations.” David Stratton, The Australian.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube.

THE TRIP (2010) | Michael Winterbottom

Starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, playing loose versions of themselves, Coogan is asked by The Observer to tour the country’s finest restaurants, but after his girlfriend backs out, he must take his best friend and source of infinite aggravation, Brydon. Disarmingly charming, funny and poignant, THE TRIP unexpectedly ventures from the chemistry between its stars to explore two men entering mid-life crises.

“Think The Odd Couple with sartorial style and more bickering. Add hints of truisms about middle age, sex, family, mortality and the limits of friendship and The Trip reveals itself to be more than it initially appears.” Linda Barnard, Toronto Star.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream now on Stan.

SPARTACUS (1960) | Stanley Kubrick

A slave named Spartacus leads a revolt against the oppressive Roman republic. Featuring one of the greatest performances by the late Kirk Douglas and helmed by one of the greatest directors to ever grace cinema Stanley Kubrick, SPARTACUS is a true swords-and-sandals epic and Hollywood classic.

“There have been other versions of the Spartacus story, including a silent epic and a more recent TV series, but Kubrick’s film can’t be beaten.” David Stratton, The Australian.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream now on Netflix.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) | George Miller

A warrior rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search of her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a deranged worshiper and a drifter named Max. A fuel-injected kick-start of the Mad Max franchise, George Miller roars back onto cinema screens with this over-the-top (in the best way possible) instant classic that holds its own as one of the most exhilarating films ever made.

“[Miller’s] uncompromising, yet resolutely accessible vision melts down and re-forges the template all of his contemporaries in the action field will have to work with from now on.” Leigh Paatsch, Herald Sun.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream now on Stan.

APOCOLYPSE NOW (1979) | Francis Ford Coppola

A U.S. Army officer is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who has defected and who sees himself as a god. Francis Ford Coppola’s haunting, hallucinatory vision of the Vietnam War is cinema at its most audacious and powerful and is undeniably one of the greatest cinematic achievements of our time.

“Apocalypse Now is not merely the greatest film to come out of the Vietnam experience but one of the great works about the madness of our times.” Phillip French, Guardian.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream now on Foxtel Now.
