Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave) must vacate the closing mental hospital where she’s spent most of her adult life, but she refuses to leave as she hopes her long lost son will return. Psychiatrist Dr Grene (Eric Bana), called in to assess her condition, delves into Roseanne's past to uncover the truth. There we see young Rose (Rooney Mara), upended from Belfast by war and newly arrived to County Sligo, but her self-possession and exotic Protestantism prove lighting rods for the repressed townspeople. The Secret Scripture immerses us in the history of Ireland's political and religious tensions, chronicling a life blighted by terrible mistreatment and ignorance, and yet marked still by love, passion and hope.
