GFF17 The Killing of a Sacred Deer

CTC 109 MIN

Synopsis

“[Yorgos Lanthimos] further cements his position among the world's most interesting contemporary filmmakers.” The Hollywood Reporter

The father of the ‘Greek Weird Wave’ and the subject of a mini retrospective at GFF16, Yorgos Lanthimos, returns with his most dark and confronting beguilement yet – a brooding tale of both allegory and psychological horror that calls on classics from the likes of Kubrick and Polanski.

Charismatic surgeon Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) and his wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) live a seemingly idyllic life with their two children (Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic), if not one that is sterile in its façade. Outside of hours, Steven meets with Martin (Barry Keoghan), a troubled and troubling boy who has a habit of showing up when not expected and paying undue attention to the Murphy family.

When the Murphy’s youngest child is struck down with a mysterious illness, the power that Martin holds over Steven will mean the difference between life and death.

Winner of Best Screenplay and nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
