Opera in five acts (1868)
New Production! This much anticipated new Paris Opera staging features the great French baritone Ludovic Tézier in the title role as the melancholic Danish prince. Ambroise Thomas' opera is based on a French adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play by Alexandre Dumas. He and his librettists Michel Carré and Jules Barbier imbued the tale with an intensity that contributes to one of the most beautiful scores in the repertoire. The story is dominated by Hamlet’s existential questions, the ghost of his murdered father (Clive Bayley) and his doomed love for the lustrous Ophelia (Lisette Oropesa). A milestone of grand opera for which director Krzysztof Warlikowski, ever fathoming the depths of the human soul, redraws the Shakespearean contours. Pierre Dumoussaud conducts.
