A fable woven from the true Tragedy, Spencer takes an intimate look at the lies and conflicts which plagued the marriage of the people’s princess, Diana.
Set over three days around Christmas 1991, Diana (Kristen Stewart) is fed up with cold Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) and a separation is looming – the princess is haunted by her past and the heavy burden of her role within the monarchy. The film diverges from auto-biographical drama into a moody, ghostly fairy-tale – bringing to life the rumours of affairs and divorce which psychologically haunted Diana. Directed by Academy-award nominated Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Ema) the film stars Kristen Stewart as a mesmerising and uncanny portrait of Diana. Disorienting fantasy sequences and the dissonant soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread, We Need to Talk about Kevin) become an eerie proxy for Diana’s rapidly deteriorating mental health. The film features Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, Sean Harris and Jack Farthing as an exquisite supporting cast.
Ultimately, Spencer seeks to ennoble the late princess and her ordeal, capturing her at a moment of profound despair and panic. Stewart gives the performance of a lifetime, exposing the cracks forming behind a polished royal veneer, giving audiences a privileged reimagining of Diana’s tumultuous legacy.
