Event Details

The Russell Hobbs British Film Festival invites you to a Premiere Preview of Mr. Burton, an inspiring biographical drama that chronicles the early life of Welsh acting legend Richard Burton. Starring Harry Lawtey (Industry) as the young Burton and Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as his influential mentor Philip Burton, the film offers a poignant look at the transformative power of mentorship.

The special screening includes a complimentary glass of prosecco on arrival!

Set in the Welsh town of Port Talbot in 1942, Mr. Burton follows the journey of Richard Jenkins, a wayward schoolboy navigating the challenges of a struggling family and the pressures of a world at war. When his natural talent for drama catches the eye of his teacher, Philip Burton, a new path unfolds. Through mentorship, discipline, and love, Philip shapes Richie’s raw talent, setting him on the path to becoming Richard Burton, one of the greatest actors of the 20th century.

A tender exploration of identity, ambition, and the lasting influence of mentorship, Mr. Burton captivates with standout performances from Lawtey and Jones, alongside Palace favourite Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris). The result is a powerfully poignant tribute to the transformative power of guidance and belief.

Reviews

"Lawtey is the true star of the piece, a mesmerising presence both in early scenes as the rough-around-the-edges pupil and in latter stages of the narrative, when his volatile personality threatens to derail a thespian career before it's barely begun."

- Radio Times

"Marc Evans’s film is a lovely thing...[Toby] Jones and [Leslie] Manville are predictably excellent."

- Irish Times

"The dynamic between Jones, as kindly school teacher Philip Henry Burton, and Lawtey’s impressionable teenager Richie is at the heart of this narrative, and is compelling enough to interest even those who already know Burton’s intriguing backstory."

- Screen International
