La Bola Negra

Winner of Best Director at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, LA BOLA NEGRA is a sweeping and deeply passionate queer epic from directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, inspired by the unfinished work of legendary Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca and Alberto Conejero’s acclaimed play, ‘La Piedra Oscura’. Moving between 1932, 1937 and 2017, three men are bound across generations by desire, secrecy and the hidden histories connecting their lives. In 1932, a young scion, Carlos is black-balled and denied entry to an exclusive casino due to rumours of his sexuality. Five years later as the Spanish Civil War tears the country apart, Sebastián experiences a forbidden love that crosses enemy lines. Decades later, Alberto begins uncovering a buried family history that draws him towards lives and relationships deliberately erased from memory. As intimate romances collide with political violence and inherited silence, fragments of the past gradually reveal how one generation’s secrets continue to shape the next. Led by Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau and Carlos González, with Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz and eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close, LA BOLA NEGRA is an opulent and profoundly moving portrait of queer lives across generations, transforming Lorca’s unfinished words into a stirring story of love, memory and the voices history tried to silence.
