Synopsis

It will never stop. A haunting and authentic directorial debut from Australian writer-director Adrian Chiarella, LEVITICUS delivers a new, poignant entry into the coming-of-age horror genre. An isolated Australian small town hosts the evils of religious fanaticism and its consequences for queer youth, creating an atmosphere that is both chilling and near-claustrophobic. Joe Bird (Talk to Me) and Stacy Clausen intimately embody Naim and Ryan, magnetically attracted teens coming into their sexuality, yet facing physical and spiritual violence at every turn. When their growing bond is discovered by their community, a ritual is performed on them, releasing a violent entity that takes the form of the victim’s purest desire, each other. At times sensual, and just as often thrilling, with a standout performance from the critically acclaimed Mia Wasikowska, LEVITICUS shines as an authentic reflection on what it means to love queerly despite the persistent dangers from within and without.

Reviews

Artfully mixing real life horrors and the terror that can only come when the supernatural is present, Leviticus is simply one of the year’s best films.

Le Noir Auteur

There’s an astonishing beauty in the flames of this rebuttal of ancient codes of morality that left no room for grace; Bird and Clausen are on fire here.

ScreenHub

Chiarella has instantly made himself a promising voice in horror, delivering a personal and hopeful perspective for millions of people worldwide while influencing the next generation of subversive horror film lovers.

AwardsWatch

Creepy and heartbreaking in equal measure, it turns queer longing into nightmare fuel without ever losing sight of the tenderness and humanity that make its horror so devastating.

The Jam Report

Both Bird and Clausen do impressive work as the teens under fire. Mia Wasikowska excels as the single mother under the delusion that she’s doing what’s best of her child. And Jeremy Blewitt delivers a terrific turn as Hunter.
